Claude Pricing Changes: Is Anthropic Removing the 5-Hour Usage Limit?
Anthropic has changed its Claude subscription lineup, and verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour usage limit. This does not mean the restriction has disappeared for everyone. Pro and Max retain five-hour session limits, while Ultra still has a weekly usage allowance. Here is what the plans mean as of November 1, 2026.
π Key takeaways
β Pro: $20 per month, with five-hour and weekly limits.
β Max: $100 per month, offering five times Pro's usage per five-hour period and per week.
β Ultra: $200 per month; verified accounts have no five-hour session cap.
β Weekly usage still matters: Ultra offers ten times Pro's weekly allowance, not unlimited usage.
β Existing Max 20x subscribers: automatically move to Ultra without a subscription price increase.
β±οΈ What does Claude's five-hour limit actually mean?
The five-hour limit does not mean you can use Claude for only five hours each day. It is a usage window that begins when you send your first message. Your session allowance resets five hours later. If you exhaust that allowance early, you normally need to wait for the reset before using the included allowance again.
There is no universal fixed number of messages. Your capacity depends on conversation length, attached files, model choice, and the complexity of your requests. Paid plans also have a separate weekly allowance, so a fresh five-hour window does not automatically restore an exhausted weekly budget.
π³ How do Pro, Max and Ultra compare?
Plan | US web monthly price | Five-hour limit | Weekly allowance |
|---|---|---|---|
Pro | $20 | Yes | 1Γ baseline |
Max | $100 | Yes | 5Γ Pro |
Ultra | $200 | Not for verified accounts | 10Γ Pro |
These are US web subscription prices before applicable taxes. Your final bill may vary by region or app-store purchase. Pro also has an annual billing option, while Max and Ultra are offered as monthly subscriptions.
A notable part of the change is that Max 20x has been renamed Ultra. Existing subscribers transition automatically without a price change. However, the old '20x' name should not be confused with the new advertised weekly entitlement: Anthropic currently specifies ten times Pro's weekly usage for Ultra.
π Does buying Ultra remove the limit immediately?
Not necessarily. The exemption applies to verified Ultra accounts. Anthropic automatically evaluates factors such as account and payment history to prevent fraud and abuse. A temporary session limit can remain while an account is not yet verified.
Completing phone verification during checkout is a separate process and does not itself remove the temporary limit. Anthropic says account verification happens automatically, without a separate user application. To check your status, open Settings β Usage. If you do not see a 'Current session' bar, your Ultra account is verified for this purpose.
π Does no five-hour cap mean unlimited Claude?
No. Ultra still has a weekly limit across models, and certain features have their own allowances. Anthropic may apply additional restrictions for capacity management and fair use. Removing a session cap means longer uninterrupted work within the remaining weekly budget, not unrestricted usage.
Consider someone working on lengthy reports or running Claude Code through complicated development tasks. Without the five-hour interruption, that person may be able to work more continuously. But heavy activity can still exhaust the weekly allowance. Claude chat, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code draw from the same account-level usage pool.
π‘ What if Pro or Max runs out of usage?
The simplest option is to wait until the relevant session or weekly limit resets. Eligible paid subscribers can also enable Usage credits, which let Claude continue on pay-as-you-go billing when included usage runs out. These credits are additional charges, not unlimited usage included in the subscription.
If you choose usage credits, set a monthly spending cap first. Some accounts may also see an occasional free limit-reset offer in the usage settings, but this is not a guaranteed feature for every subscriber.
π― Which plan makes sense for you?
For occasional writing, translation, and everyday questions, first check whether Pro provides enough capacity. If you frequently analyze documents, conduct research, or work on code, Max's higher five-hour and weekly budgets may be valuable.
Ultra is more compelling when five-hour interruptions regularly disrupt long, intensive work. Still, it costs twice as much as Max, and the session-limit exemption depends on account verification. It is not a blanket promise of unlimited access.
Before changing your subscription, open Settings β Usage in Claude and check your current-session usage, weekly allowance, and reset times. That single check will show which restriction actually affects your work and whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
