Claude copywriting and copy-editing Skills: Installation, Usage, and Key Differences

Use copywriting to develop marketing copy and copy-editing to refine an existing draft. This guide covers the two community skills in Corey Haines’s marketingskills collection, with installation instructions for Claude Code. They are third-party skills, rather than built-in Anthropic features.

  • ✍️ Choose copywriting for a new product page, headline, or call to action.

  • 🔎 Choose copy-editing when you already have text to improve.

  • 💻 Run the installation command in a terminal for Claude Code.

  • 🌍 Specify your audience, language, and regional spelling in your request.

What does each skill do?

Task

copywriting

copy-editing

Starting material

Product details and a brief

An existing draft

Main purpose

Develop page copy and calls to action

Improve clarity and persuasion

Example

Draft a product introduction

Refine a published product description

Copywriting helps explain customer benefits and the action a visitor should take. Copy-editing preserves your core message and voice while reviewing clarity, tone, benefits, evidence, specificity, emotional relevance, and barriers to action. A request to edit a single line stays focused on that line.

💻 Install the skills in Claude Code

Use an environment with Claude Code and Node.js/npm available. Open a terminal in your project directory and run:

npx skills add coreyhaines31/marketingskills --skill copywriting copy-editing -a claude-code

Follow the installer’s prompts to choose the installation scope and check that installation completes. The -a claude-code option explicitly selects Claude Code. The repository documents .claude/skills/ for this agent; an installation only in .agents/skills/ may not be recognized.

Claude’s web app uses a different workflow. The repository provides Claude web ZIP packages through Releases, subject to account permissions and skill execution requirements. Running this terminal command does not install skills into the web app.

✍️ Give the skill a useful brief

Here is a sample request for a hypothetical handmade gift business:

“Use the copywriting skill to draft a product page for a handmade plaster fragrance ornament. The audience is US gift shoppers. Use friendly US English and only the product facts below. Provide a headline, product introduction, and order prompt. Do not invent reviews or performance claims.”

For an existing draft, try: “Use copy-editing to review the text below. Keep the brand voice and core message. Improve awkward wording and flag unsupported claims. Show the changes with a short reason for each.”

For UK or other markets, specify local spelling and supply the actual delivery, pricing, and returns details. A clear brief gives the model concrete constraints to work with.

📌 Check the output before publishing

These skills provide writing instructions; they do not guarantee sales or search rankings. Verify product details and commercial terms against your own records, and check that the language suits your readers.

Start by pasting one current product paragraph and asking copy-editing to revise only that paragraph and explain the changes.
