How to Use Claude copy-editing to Improve Awkward Marketing Copy
Claude’s copy-editing skill helps refine marketing copy you have already written. Give it the original text, intended audience, placement, and desired action so the request has clear boundaries. This guide refers to the community skill in Corey Haines’s marketingskills collection.
✏️ Start with an existing draft and identify its readers.
🎯 Specify whether you want one sentence or the whole passage edited.
🔎 Limit claims to facts you can substantiate.
📌 Request a before-and-after comparison, then check the result yourself.
🛠️ Check that the skill is available
copy-editing is a community skill for compatible agent environments such as Claude Code. It is not a standard editing button in every Claude chat. Check the author and description when adding it, since other skills may share the name.
In an environment where it is installed, explicitly ask Claude to use the copy-editing skill. You can also request edits in an ordinary chat, but mentioning the name alone does not install or confirm execution of the skill.
📝 Provide the draft and editing boundaries
For an online store, explain whether the reader is shopping for a gift, comparing options, or preparing to order. State the tone you want to keep and any wording that must remain unchanged.
A prompt you can adapt
“Use the copy-editing skill to review the text below. The audience is customers looking for thank-you gifts, and the copy will appear on a product page. Keep a friendly tone. Reduce awkward wording and repetition. Do not add statistics, reviews, discounts, or product capabilities I have not supplied. Show the original, revision, and reason for each change. Flag facts that need checking. Draft: paste your text here.”
✨ Replace vague praise with useful information
Consider this fictional gift-store example: “Make every special moment even more special with our unique touch.” The sentence gives shoppers little information about the product.
A possible revision is “Say thank you with a handmade plaster air freshener.” If personalized labels are actually available, you can ask Claude to include that detail. Specific wording still needs factual support. Avoid adding production times or customization options just to make the copy sound more convincing.
🔧 Keep small edits focused
If only the opening feels awkward, ask: “Shorten the first sentence. Keep the product name and all other paragraphs unchanged.” Follow with a specific adjustment, such as reducing pressure to buy, rather than requesting a fresh rewrite each time.
Review button text in context too. “Choose your options” can make sense when the next step is selecting a product variant. Delivery promises and refund statements must match your actual policies.
✅ Compare the revision with your actual offer
Check that the edited version preserves the product details, pricing conditions, and ordering process. Clearer wording does not guarantee higher sales. Pick one awkward sentence from your product page and paste it into the prompt above.
