Do You Need a Visa for Japan? Visa-Free Entry Rules to Check Before You Travel

Before booking your trip to Japan, check the rules for the passport you will use. Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality, passport type, planned activities and length of stay. Your country of residence can also affect where and how you apply.

Who can visit Japan without a visa?

Japan offers short-stay visa exemptions to eligible passport holders from many countries and regions. Examples include South Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and many European countries.

Most eligible visitors receive permission to stay for up to 90 days. Different limits apply to some nationalities: Thailand and Indonesia generally receive 15 days, while Brunei and Qatar receive 30 days.

Passport conditions matter too. For example, Indonesian travelers need a qualifying ePassport registered under Japan’s visa waiver scheme. Other exemptions may depend on an electronic passport or a particular passport category. Check the conditions attached to your passport rather than relying only on a country name in a visa-free list.

What activities does a short visit cover?

A short stay may cover tourism, visiting relatives or friends, and certain business activities without remuneration in Japan. Attending a meeting and taking up a paid job are different immigration purposes.

If you plan to work, study long term or move to Japan, check the appropriate visa and status of residence. Some applications involve a Certificate of Eligibility, or COE, arranged through a representative in Japan. A short trip does not automatically make a work activity permissible.

Does your passport need six months of validity?

For an ordinary short visit, Japan generally requires your passport to remain valid throughout your stay, rather than for an additional six months. Check that it will still be valid when you leave.

You should also check any transit country’s requirements and your airline’s document rules. These may differ from Japan’s entry requirements.

What should you have ready for immigration?

Keep your return or onward travel booking accessible. Immigration officers may ask for evidence that you intend to leave Japan within your permitted stay. Having your accommodation details and itinerary ready can also make questions about your trip easier to answer.

Visa-free travel does not remove immigration checks. A visa itself does not guarantee admission either: you must receive landing permission when you arrive. Follow the period of stay actually granted to you.

What if you need a Japanese visa?

Check the Japanese embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence before applying. Required documents and submission methods vary by location and travel purpose.

JAPAN eVISA is available to eligible applicants for single-entry tourism visits. Access depends on residence and other conditions; some applicants apply directly online, while others must use an accredited agency.

If you receive an eVISA, follow the instructions for displaying the live “Visa issuance notice.” A screenshot, PDF or printed copy is not accepted as a substitute for that display.

Is Visit Japan Web a visa?

Visit Japan Web lets travelers register information for immigration and customs procedures before arrival. It does not issue a visa or replace one.

You can use it to prepare arrival information, but you must still meet the visa requirements that apply to your passport and trip. Completing an online arrival registration does not make an otherwise visa-required traveler eligible for visa-free entry.

Do travelers need JESTA now?

Japan is developing JESTA, an electronic travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers. It is separate from Visit Japan Web.

As of October 31, 2026, the legislation establishing JESTA has been enacted, but it should not be treated as an application requirement already operating for all visa-free visitors. The relevant provisions take effect on a date set by government ordinance, no later than March 31, 2029. Check the implementation notice for your actual travel dates.

Before departure, match your passport to the applicable entry rules, confirm that your planned activities are allowed, and keep your travel documents within easy reach. If your nationality, residence or travel purpose changes, check your eligibility again rather than relying on the arrangements from a previous trip.
